The Government Village Shopping Center in Mid City, which is home to businesses including Arzi’s Restaurant, Subway and U.S. Agencies, has been purchased for $1.6 million by a developer who plans to upgrade the property and add an apartment complex.

Anthony Kimble, of Kimble Properties, bought the shopping center and 2.5 acres it’s located on, from Garry and Lanny Lewis in a deal that closed Friday. The center is located on Government Street at the intersection of Community College Drive, across the street from Capital One Bank and kitty-corner from Tiger Deaux-nuts.

Brent Struthers of Beau Box Commercial Real Estate represented Kimble in the deal and says the buyer plans to keep the current lineup of commercial tenants. The project will involve upgrading the retail center and building a multifamily complex on the two-acre tract behind the property.

Kimble, an investor in the Electric Depot development in Mid City and the owner of several properties in the Mid City area, says he hopes to break ground on the project in the coming 12 to 18 months. He is currently working on architectural plans and says the plans have not been firmed up yet, but the apartments will likely be market rate.

“Downtown is pretty much saturated with investors,” Kimble says. “We’re just looking at Mid City as a place with some opportunity for the type of projects we want to do.”
